Absurdist Masterworks

An evening of Absurdist Theatre

This Unique theatrical experience featured 3 short Absurdist plays:  Quad and Play by Samuel Beckett and The Bald Soprano by Eugene Ionesco.

Here is a video of our production of Quad.   It is a written play, without words.  I designed the lighting and also composed original music for the production.  The lighting was inspired by Beckett’s instructions emphasizing primary colors and research that explored mandala imagery.  The music was repetitive and percussion based, per Beckett’s instructions.  I used tuned percussion in order to align the music with the director’s vision for the movement. I found inspiration from minimalist composers with whom Beckett had collaborated with.

The following sounds were created for The Bald Soprano.  The first three sounds are the clock sounds called for in the script.  I chose a cuckoo clock to mirror the absurd language of the play.  I played the clock sounds at various tempos throughout the play as a way of further separating the world of the play from reality.

Slow Clock

Fast Clock

Multi-tempo Clock

This clock was set to the tempo of the music it mixed into.  The clock and music were beat-matched so the fade in was smooth and deliberate.

The following two music selections were made by the director, but she wanted to hear only short sections of the songs and loop them to run for several minutes.  Here are the music cuts that I edited so that they looped seamlessly.
