I Sea

I Sea

This was the premier production of the play I Sea, which won the 2006 Kennedy Center Theatre for Youth Award. In the story, Caitlin, a thirteen-year old girl, isn’t speaking with her mother, Janet. She does not want to see her friend, Bobby. It seems all Caitlin wants is to be left alone on the beach near her home. Caitlin soon learns that things aren’t always what they seem as water and sand spring to life in the form of magical beings that become her guides when she gets lost on the beach. I Sea is the story of a girl struggling to reclaim her voice as she makes the unpredictable transition from childhood to young adulthood.

The sound of waves followed by original music that I created to play as the character of the Sea emerges from the water.

The sound of a sand dollar breaking in the fantasy world of the sea.

After the sand dollar breaks, a new character, Sandborn, rises from the place where it broke.  This is the sound of his apparition.

Each of these cues are heard at different moments in the play when Caitlin begins to struggle to keep the ugly thoughts from entering her mind and carrying her away from the peaceful world of the sea.

The voices of the Sea and Sandborn that were recorded to play as Caitlin heads back to her reality from the comforting depths of the ocean.
