The Great God Pan

by Amy Herzog
directed by Kathleen McKinley

The sound design for The Great God Pan, directed by Kathleen McKinley, consisted primarily of flute music and environmental sounds that set the location.  After conversations with the director, we decided to use flute music symbolizing the god Pan, since he is referenced in the title of the play.

Sounds were used to set the scene in a coffee shop, a garden, a city, an apartment with the TV on, and a city.

The most prolific sound in this show was a moment in the play where the main character is flooded with a memory that was suppressed for many years.  I was able to create the soundtrack for this moment as it played out in his head.  Combined with the lighting design, this was a powerful moment in the play. First the audience heard the sounds of kids playing at a creek, and then the ugliness layers in and pervades his memory.
